Well-woman exams
An annual well-woman exam is an important part of your overall health. You should schedule a well-woman exam once a year, starting at age 21.
A well-woman exam usually includes:
- Breast exam
- Pap smear (cervical cancer screening)
- Pelvic exam
- Physical exam
During your exam, your gynecologist will ask questions to learn more about your health history and provide you individualized gynecological care. Your doctor will likely ask you about the following:
- Contraception use
- Drug or alcohol use
- Family history
- Menstrual cycle and regularity
- Pregnancies
- Sexual activity
- Surgeries
After age 66, you likely won't need a Pap smear each year if your previous three tests have come back normal. You can still benefit from an annual well-woman exam when you no longer need a Pap test. Your gynecologist can help you with postmenopausal symptoms like vaginal dryness, painful intercourse or urinary incontinence.
